Synopsis[]

"Bring me a bottle or two, me lad, bring me a bottle or four,
for the company fine o' women and wine is what I'm looking for.
Bring me my big ole' knife me lad, bring me my rusty ole' gun,
for the wine and the women ain't comin' for free
and there's plenty of work to be done.
There's plenty of folks hereabouts, me lad, whose bellies and purses are fat,
they drive company cars, smoke expensive cigars, and have men to take care of their hat
They don't give a care for us poor hatless fools, though out in the gutter we sit,
but the thing 'bout full bellies and purses, me lad, is both are well easy to slit.
Bring me a bottle or two, me lad, bring me a bottle or four,
shake the dust off my cloak, bring me my best smokes, an' leave all your regrets at the door.
So make sure your ole' knife is sharp, me lad, an' make sure your powder is dry,
for the world is awash with fools, blood, and gold, and all men are just waitin' to die.
"

"Bring me a bottle", old Devil's drinking song

Oscar walks through the darker side of the streets of the Shades in search of five Devils interested in breaking into Yre, and steals armour for Allison - to whom he is grateful for pushing Cio to accept her old thieving self. Together with Charon, a Green Devil that uses the Dead to accumulate gold for him, and Lucky Felicia, the "door opener", the eleven Thieves of Yre speak the Night Curse and infiltrate the tunnels into the outer levels of Mammon's fortress.

Upon entering into the first room, however, they quickly discover that all the clutter and furniture in the abandoned sections of the fractal tower is actually composed of vicious Mimics. In the fight for survival, Allison begins to fall under the influence of Incubus' mind-link.

Meanwhile, Nyave and White Chain wait impatiently for the group's return at Berand's cafe, near the Grand Bank. As they chat, the former princess of Mykos angers the Angel by asking about the dreams she sacrificed and commenting on her humanity. However, before the argument can escalate, Petal Knight 33 Judicious Rains Sear the Unrepentant and another guild goon berate Berand for not paying his protection racket dues, and White Chain steps up to intervene.

As the thieves crawl deeper into the vaults thanks to Suuz's acrobatic expertise and lengths of cabling that allow them to move high above the monster-infested ground, Allison falls behind. The Gold Devil takes then her chance to cut her cable loose, letting her fall into a hall full of chair-monsters. Allison, however, is moved by Incubus to reflexively use her White Art to teleport herself right above and behind Suuz, and then push her in turn into the jaws of the monsters. Allison initially enjoys this gruesome end, but soon regains control and pukes in horror.

Unperturbed, the Devils keep advancing, much to Allison's surprise. Cio sullenly remarks on how she has reminded her that Devils have no friends, and Oscar goes as far as to say she'd make a good Devil herself. Incubus takes this chance to reinforce in Allison the idea that she is better off on her own instead of depending on others who would use her for their own ends, but he leaves her as the group reaches the Door.
