Synopsis[]
We return to the market of an unknown city where we first saw a young Maya beg Meti to teach her the Sword Law. The square is emptier and in a state of disrepair, due to the start of the Universal War, and Maya is now a young and fierce woman clad in armor that wishes to join Au Vam's Middle Army, but also foolishly demands to know the secrets of Meti's swordfighting techniques. Meti, however, has taken her noodles and refused her supplications every two weeks for 14 years, because Maya hasn't dared to cut her hair with her sword yet. In the shadows of the market, a starving albino kid observes the exchange.
When Maya realises his presence, she decides to take the hot noodles away from Meti and offer them to the boy, but instead he jumps on the chance to steal her sword and cut away his long, unkempt hair in a bloody mess. This is met with approval from the old swordfighter, and pushes Maya to finally do the same.
This is all part of memories being retold by a much older Maya to one of the Pursuers (most likely Monkey) at an Atru temple in some world of the Wheel. Back in the present timeline, she explains how she and her fellow student grew apart, and how he killed Meti and threw her corpse to the dogs. She wishes for vengeance, but knows that he, as a Demiurge, cannot be defeated - she remembers how her master showed them their wondrous powers dedicated to brutal and senseless fighting during the war.
She also reminisces that Meti once taught her a lesson she did not heed at the time - that to protect something's life, one must be ready to strike first and kill any threats without hesitation, or lose everything. This, she understands now, was a warning about her classmate.
As they return to where the other Pursuers are gathered around some heralds of the Celestial Empire that proclaim the coming celebration of the Ring of Power, Monkey expresses doubt about Maya's age and continued hatred towards Incubus since the Universal War. Maya then admits to be a fool for not having sought an honourable death early on and instead agonizing for centuries, waiting for a chance to strike at her foe and wallowing in depression.
